Shongololo Dune Express – Tuesday 5th September

Up at 5 for a quick coffee then a pre-dawn drive to dune 45 to watch the sunrise – which is very spectacular, the Dune getting redder as the sun climbs over the horizon.

Back to camp for breakfast then the long drive to Swakopmund. We stop for coffee at Solitaire – a suitable description as there seems to be nothing there beyond the ‘service station’ decorated with the (obviously traditional) broken down cars. It also has a blackboard containing the latest news headline – the death of “‘crocodile man’ Steve Owen” (sic).
The rest of the afternoon is punctuated by brief stops to observe wildlife, plant life or scenery before arriving at Swakopmund beach for a surprise champagne and oyster reception from Petra!
