Shongololo Dune Express – Wednesday 6th September

We set out this morning from a mist bound train for Spitzkoppe mountain that becomes ever clearer and more impressive as we approach. We scramble up some boulders at the foot of the mountain and find an interesting lizard then drive a bit further round to ‘Small Bushmans Paradise’ to see the cave paintings.

From here we drive to Henties Bay for lunch (and a look at the golf course built on sand) . We are warned that service is slow – and it is!

After lunch we drive up to cape cross – site of the first Portuguese landing and also a very smelly fur seal colony (with a lone jackal looking for a free lunch).

The original cross was replaced by the Germans, who took tie original back to Berlin – however subsequent research revealed they put it in the wrong place – so now there are two replicas! There are plaques in English, German and Portuguese explaining this and some helpful English tourists are cleaning the English sign to make it clearer to photograph. The other countries can clean their own signs!

On the way back de take a minor detour through Wlotzkasbaken – colourful holiday homes between Henties Bay and Swakopmund.
